I came into counselling after working in mental health and formal organisations where I met with individuals and families. Having been on my own journey of facing many of life’s challenges I understand the value of support.

I worked with children, families and individuals for over 25 years, where the experience and training I received in Attachment focused approaches further developed my understanding of the complexity of relationships. Though I do not usually offer Attachment focused work (DDP) as an intervention, the knowledge of and working with this approach continue to influence my practice.

I have also worked with alcohol addiction.

What should you do next?

Choosing a counsellor is a very personal decision. For anyone on this road I would recommend they look for someone who they feel they can trust with their personal information, someone they feel is not going to talk to anyone else about them and who is not going to make them feel stupid. It is vital that you feel comfortable and safe; this is my responsibility to help you with this. It is my job to help you build up the trust to dare to say what is troubling you. You can be reassured with me being a member of the BACP and registered with HCPC that these bodies have the power to investigate any complaint you might have.

It may be useful for you to know that most counselling courses require their trainees to undertake their own therapy in order to qualify.

Case study:

Sheryl is a 50 year old woman whose periods of depression and feeling low had pervaded her life for many years. On occasions she would ask herself if this was it for her.

We worked together for over 8 months. We looked at her previous experiences exploring what could be at the root of her difficulties. We reviewed how she felt our sessions were going re-focusing when necessary.

Her low mood episodes reduced to the point she felt she could change her job and take the plunge into exploring job roles following her love of nature.
